Emo Sunday: If I don’t let myself be happy now, then when?
Emo Sunday vol. 1: Jimmy Eat World, Donuts, Reality TV, and Peptide Injections
In my teen years, my cousin and our closest friend had a ritual called Emo Sunday. We would drink tea, eat pancakes, listen to emo and acoustic 90s alternative, and rewatch “old” movies (When Harry Met Sally, for example). Plus, writing, drawing, and generally collaging inside composition notebooks. Or on my friend’s bedroom walls. 🤷🏻♀️
What is emo, you may ask? I asked ChatGPT to explain:
"Emo" is a genre of music that emerged in the mid-1980s as a subgenre of hardcore punk. The term "emo" is short for "emotional hardcore" or "emocore," emphasizing emotional expression, often with confessional or introspective lyrics. Over the years, it has evolved and diversified, with bands incorporating elements from various other genres, such as indie rock, pop punk, and post-hardcore. Emo also describes a subculture associated with this music, characterized by distinct fashion choices, such as skinny jeans, band t-shirts, studded belts, and often black or brightly colored hair. The subculture values self-expression and often deals with themes of emotional pain, angst, and introspection.
Not bad!
While the days of dying my hair black and wearing studded belts… okay, admittedly, I did just buy this one…are behind me, and despite my getting into pop country over the last decade, my inner emo kid is alive and well.
Well, Emo Grandmother, as I fondly refer to her now. She’s still introspective and exploring emotional keynotes on the human design roof. But she’s integrating the experiences she journaled about as an angsty teen and early 20-something — and she’s a little bit wiser.
This is my version of a love list. It is an opportunity to be nostalgic and share what’s currently nourishing me, lighting me up, and giving me all the feels.
But first, my books are open for 1:1 sessions!
I’ve opened up two one-on-one sessions: intuitive readings and The Session. My popular intuitive reading audio is still available, but I’ve been yearning for more one-on-one connection. An intuitive reading is great if you’re looking to make sense of the chaos that seems to be swirling about, and The Session is perfect if you’re ready to get energy moving and initiate your next chapter. Excited to see you on Zoom!

For Me This Is Heaven by Jimmy Eat World: This song is my favorite of all time, and I try to come back to it in both good and bad times. I’m situationally depressed and can’t talk about it, but this song reminds me – and hopefully you! – that you deserve to find at least one moment of happiness every day.
“This is what she said gets her through it:
If I don’t let myself be happy now, then when? If not now, when?”
MySpace-style About Me pages: Inspired by creative business consultant Eden Cantrelle, I had to build my new About Me page like a MySpace. I’m considering adding a top 8 for good measure. This, for sure, brings me back to peak Emo days.
Contemplating: The book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle*, by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski. And the decades of chronic stress likely stored in my body 😬
The Lisa Vanderpump Reality TV universe: I got into the Housewives franchise during medical leave when mold illness impaired my memory and cognitive functions. It became my entertaining escape during sauna sessions, rest, and IV treatments. Lisa Vanderpump captivated me with her style, seemingly enviable marriage, no-nonsense attitude, love for dogs, activism, and sheer powerhouse nature. Plus, Scandoval resurfaced an old trauma and emotions that I didn’t realize needed additional integration. I felt a deep connection with Ariana because of our similar experiences. IYKYK.
This spell for living well: I’ve started making this a part of my morning ritual, either after I’ve had my salted hot chocolate or when I get my pup, Potato (see below), up for the day. Getting my feet in the grass, taking in the sunshine, and starting the day with grounding and gratitude feels good.
How I’m healing my relationship with food: This one is a doozy. I found Kari Dahlgren on Pinterest, and she takes a psycho-spiritual approach to healing the relationship with food. I sat down with her workbook, Why We Do The Things We Do, and just reading the content on the first page had me balling my eyes out. I cleared the energy with some Gala Darling-style tapping and felt immediately better.
The donut I loved the most this past month: My best friend will tell you that when she thinks of donuts, she thinks of me. My favorite donut was absolutely limoncello crunch from my local cafe. A limoncello glaze, lemon curd, crushed cookies, and lemon sugar dust? These are a few of my favorite things.
The recipe I have on repeat: Instant Pot risotto. For dinner this week, I’m making it with grilled broccoli, corn, and garlic scapes. If you decide to make this, I recommend cooking it for longer than the recommended 5 minutes. It was a little chewier than I tend to like, so I will experiment with 7 minutes instead.
The Podcast episode I listened to twice in a row: This one about how Manifestors are often perceived as troublemakers, even when they’ve not created trouble. I felt seen, and if you are a Manifestor or love a Manifestor, I can’t recommend this episode from The Manifestor Community enough.
Content creator I’m obsessed with: Ally Duncan, aka sugarpusher. While I was delighted to discover her emo/pop punk roots, what brought me to her was the tiny baking videos with Lofi music in the background. So soothing, so satisfying.
Currently reading: I’ve completely fallen in love with Emily Henry’s writing, and I love her latest novel, Funny Story*. I’m also listening to Sarah J. Maas’ book, Heir of Fire*. There’s something about having romantasy novels read to me that just brings things to life in a different way.
Currently studying: I’m about to dive into training on peptides before experimenting with them. I’ve never given myself injections, so I’m a little nervous, but that fear motivation (human design) will serve me well.
